"FUNDACIÓ NÉIXER"

Ovum Donate

What is IBILAB´s Néixer Foundation?

The ovocyte donation programme is within IBILAB´s Néixer Foundation's lines of action for Reproduction Studies. The IBILAB´s Néixer Foundation was founded in Palma de Majorca as a non-profit organisation. One of its aims was to help women find the ovums they need to have children.

IBILAB´s Néixer Foundation hopes to make the society aware of the importance of donating ovums as the only solution for many women to achieve their hopes of becoming mothers.

For this we provide information to groups of young, healthy women that may be donors. An interested donor is given the detailed information on the procedure along the requisites. Once selected as an ovum donor the donation preparation begins.

. What requisites are there to be a donor?

- Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.

- Be in good psycho-physical health.

- Live in Majorca, since donating requires several check-ups.

- Have previously had sexual relations

- Not adopted (the biological parent's information is required).

The donor is aware that the process is anonymous and altruistic, and does not have the obligation or right over the child born from her ovums.

How is the donor selected?

To select the donors a detailed clinical history is created along with a gynaecological exam, blood tests, ultrasound, tests on the microbiology of the vagina and cervix and psychological tests. If the results are normal, the donor is accepted. All donors are duly informed about their results.

Does donating affect the donor's future reproduction?

Donating ovums does not reduce the probabilities of pregnancy for the donor, since women begin with 400 to 500 thousand ovums upon reaching the age of reproduction, which are much more than they can use, since they only ovulate between 400 or 500 times in a lifetime: once a month.

In order to produce an ovum during a menstrual cycle the ovary begins to grow hundreds of ovums, and then the best is selected to ovulate. The rest of the ovums are reabsorbed and/or eliminated by the body.

In the ovum donation procedure with hormonal treatment they take some of the ovums that were going to be reabsorbed, usually between 10 and 15.

How is ovum donation performed?

Once the donor is selected a daily hormone treatment is administered (subcutaneous injection) in order to mature the ovums in the ovaries, which is controlled through ultrasounds and blood tests. Extracting ovums is done with a puncture and aspiration through the vagina without any type of surgery. It is done with anaesthesia, and takes about 15 to 30 minutes, followed by an hour recuperation.

This is an outpatient procedure that does not require one to check-in to the clinic.

Compensation

The Neixer Foundation will economically compensate the future donor for any expenses and inconveniences, as stipulated by law.

What are the risks of this procedure?

- < 1% of the cases develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Ultrasounds and hormone treatment minimise this risk.

- Less than 1 % may have light bleeding or infection.

What happens to the donated ovums?

The donated ovums are used only and exclusively for helping other couple's sterility.

What are the positive aspects of donating ovums for the donor?

- A generous act of altruism with another unknown woman who hopes to be a mother.

- Medical testing is performed, which is always useful to the donor.
